FLY TYING AND FLY FISHING VIDEO

Documentation of insects, nature and waters is a cornerstone of our fly fishinging hobby. We like do document what we do and where we fish. Here’s a selection of my You Tube Fly Tying and Fly Fishing Video posts. See the You Tube channel for a complete overview.

On our You Tube channel you’ll find regular fly fishing video, but also some fly tying and nature documentaries. During the 2017 season we have recorded hours of film that eventually will be edited into nice short films on fly fishing, insects nature and fly tying.

Most videos are in Norwegian, but all films posted after October 2017 will have English subtitles. Just choose subtitling from the You Tube media player. Users are welcome to subtitle all my films in other languages. If you want to go directly to my You Tube channel, just follow this link.

Join a father and his son on a poetic fly fishing journey with nice wild trout, graylings and beautiful mayflies. English and Norwegian subs available.

Shot in the Trysil area, the Rena river, river Atna and some secret spots further north in Norway.

THE RIVENDALE CADDIS (E-12 VARIANT)

Synopsis

The Europea 12 is a classic caddis pattern. Popular i Scandinavia and fished whenever there are caddis on the water. I created this variant in a tying sessong where I promoted the CdC and Elk Pattern (Hans Weilenmann). Having been fascinated by that design, I thought: why not update the Europea 12 with some fancy CdC and wild floating barbules. Here’s finally the fly tying video. The pattern is also found on my fly tying pages under the name The Rivendale Caddis.

Locations

My tying desk at Jessheim, Norway.

Recording time

Jessheim, Norway – 10. December 2017

THE DEER HAIR EMERGER (VARIANT)

Synopsis

I love Bob Wyatt’s Deer Hair Emerger. It fishes well troughout the season and on most hatces. I have however made some small but important improvements to the wing structure, so that it lasts longer and floats better (simply by cutting through the comparadun hair with the silk)

Locations

My tying desk at Jessheim, Norway.

Recording time

Jessheim, Norway – 6. December 2017

THE BWO EMERGER WITH ANTRON

Synopsis

Actually I came up with this variant of a pretty standard mayfly emerger pattern a summer without much fishing luck. I made a few simple alterations to the choice of materials and whooops – the unfortunate first half of the season suddenly turned into fishing fortune and happieness.

Locations

My tying desk at Jessheim, Norway.

Recording time

Jessheim, Norway – 29. November 2017

THE BWO SPARKLE DUN

Synopsis

This is one of my most important patterns for the BWO (E.ignita) hatch. It performs well both during emergence and when the fish turn selective on duns. Watch this easy to follow step-by-step video and tie yourself some trout candy.

Locations

My tying desk at Jessheim, Norway.

Recording time

Jessheim, Norway – 26. November 2017

THE LAST MAYFLY

Synopsis

The Blue Wing Olive (Ephemerella Ignita) is the last major mayfly hatch in Norway. The tiny bug may hatch as late as October and attracts large fish to the surface. This film is a journey into the BWO with great shots of the mayfly with some nice fly fishing situations.

Locations

The film was shot on two locations – the Rena River and Trysil River (Trysilelva). In Rena the recordings were made just south of the suspension bridge in the fly fishing zone. The recordings from Trysil were made north in the river.

Recording time

Rena – July and August 2017

Trysil – October 2017

WILD TROUT IN TRYSIL

Synopsis

Recorded during Ten Rivers Trip 2017 in the peak of what should have been a great fly fishing summer. Unfortunately heavy wind and cold weather ruined several of the summer hatches we were waiting for. Lukas did however catch a great big wild brownie – accompanied by a a great head-banging heavy metal tune.

Locations

Trysil River – North

Recording time

Recorded early afternoon on 2. July 2017.

GRAYLING AND THE BWO

Synopsis

The Large Dark Olive (Baetis Rhodani) is the first major mayfly hatch in rivers and streams in Norway. The bug loves bad weather, and boy did we have some of that when recording the beginning of the Rhodani spring hatch of 2017.

Locations

Rena River, just north of the suspension bridge.

Recording time

Recorded 11. July 2017.

LATE NIGHT MIDGE FISHING

Synopsis

Midge and buzzer fly fishing in the high mountains in Norway is a blast. Waiting for the trout to attack a midge can be nerve wrecking. And when the fish takes, even the small ones will give a fantastic fight. Here’s an example of the thrill of late night still water fishing with midges and buzzers at Eltsjøen in Trysil.

Locations

Eltsjøen, Trysil.

Recording time

Recorded at Eltsjøen, Trysil on 24. and 25. June (evening and night).

DETACHED BODY CADDIS

Synopsis

An easy to follow SBS-video on a  great caddis pattern that will outfish most other adult caddis pattern, especially early in the season. Don’t ask me why, but try it and you’ll never regret tying and trying it. Heres more on this pattern.

Locations

My fly tying bench in Jessheim, Norway.

Recording time

8. January 2017

BAETIS RHODANI AT DESET

One of the highs in the fly fishing season in Norway is when the Large Dark Olive (Baetis Rhodani) is hatching in spring. Here’s a little tale about the important mayfly that’s the most common in rivers and streams in Norway.

Locations

Rena River

Recording time

Recorded 4. and 5. June 2017.

CLEAR WATER MAYFLY EMERGER

Synopsis

There are a bunch of fantastic patterns imitating the emerging mayfly (E. Danica). This is my pattern designed for those stretches of the river that runs slow and has clear and shallow water. Read this description of the pattern, or this article on the phenomenon or take a look at these artistic pictures of the adult Danica.

Locations

Filmed at Vilusæter in Trysil.

Recording time

15. January 2017.

THE TRYSIL DANICA

Synopsis

This SBS-video shows how to tie a traditional imitation on the Mayfly (E. Danica). The pattern is from Trysil, and is great for those fast running rivers when floatability is key. A traditional parachute, but with deer hair in the tail and wing. Read this description of the fly, or this article on how to fly fish with Danica in Trysil (text in Norwegian).

Locations

Fly tying bench in Jessheim.

Recording time

February 2017.
